The Dream Keeper
The Dream Keeper
Being me all your dreams,
You dreamers,
Bring me all of your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world.
This is Langston Hughes poem called the Dream Keeper. It's out of his book,'The Dream Keeper and other poems'. I personally think that the poem has a lot of different meanings that Hughes is trying to say. But I personally think this poem has his interpretation of his own dreams growing up. How he wished someone would encourage him with his dreams and put them together. He made it a poem so other people could know that their dreams don't have to die because of bad outcomes. That they can dream and work for as long as they want so they can achieve whatever they so please.
How do you feel about the meaning of this poem? Feel free to comment below!

Image Chef
This is an image of words that describe Langston Hughes. Author: because he has written numerous books and short stories in his lifetime. Poet: because along with writing his poetry was an amazing thing in his time, and Renaissance because his poems made a huge impact on that era.
Langston Hughes and Poetry
On February 1, 1902, a poet was born, James Langston Hughes. Best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Joplin, Missouri, his parents divorced when he was a small child. He ended up moving all the way to Mexico with his father. Brought up by his grandmother until he was thirteen, he lived a very normal life. Soon he moved to Lincoln, Illinois with his mother and her new husband. It was there in Lincoln that he began writing his poetry. Staying with his mother til after graduation, then moving to Mexico for a year and studying at Columbia University for a year. Having odd jobs here and there he managed to look after himself. In 1924 Hughes moved to Washington, D.C. , and by 1926 his book of poetry, Weary Blues, was published.
By 1930 his first novel, Not Without Laughter, was published and won the Harmon gold medal for literature. Hughes was known for his colorful portrayals of black life in America from the twenties to the sixties. Some of his primary influences were: Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Carl Sanburg, and Walt Witman. He wrote novels, short stories and plays, as well as poetry that portrayed the life of the blacks in America. Hughes was known for telling stories that reflected their actual culture, music, language, and laughter itself. Hughes contribution to the Renaissancee in the twenties was extremely important to the poetry community and poetry itself. He was one of the best poets and authors of his time.

It's almost over!!
Hey guys!! Here I am in the fourth quarter of the school year making in my final blog. I must say that blogging has become much easier than I would of thought at the beginning of the year. I have come to see that it makes explaining the book a whole lot easier. Last quarter was the highest grade I have gotten on my blogs, a 100% =). I have never been so happy with them!! So now I'm going to try for the same grade on these final blogs. We are using the same format and requirements for the blogs this quarter so I will try and switch up the blogs for you guys. Wish me luck!
The book I picked for my fourth quarter blogs is called: The Dream Keeper and other poems by Langston Hughes. I finished this book in about an hour, yes it is that short. The poems are about life and slavery mostly, but he does throw in love and dreams also. I chose this book because this quarter we are also doing a huge research paper on The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin by Mark Twain. I didnt want to be swammped with reading the book and trying to give my all in a research paper. The Dream Keeper is Hughes way of showing the struggle that most slave and black people went through in 1932. Now that is is 2012 the words really have a whole new meaning to people who read it. I would say that Hughes wanted his poems to be timeless and he did an amazing job doing so. In this book there are also wonderful sketches of the poems themselves. It gives a wonderful image to each and every poem.
The last quarter goes by really fast , as usual, so I will try my best to focus and not daydream about being outside in the sun during school. Otherwise I hope I can come up with ideas to make the last book the best of them all!

Blog Block!
So here I am, sitting in English trying to figure out what my last few blog posts should be about. It is the worst feeling in the world when you have to get something done and your brain just goes blank. When you feel like your brain cant even make a full sentence without giving you a headache. I, Arielle Jackson, have blog block. Yes, I said blog block. Have you ever had it?? You may of heard of writers block, when a author cant finish or even start his/her book because they cant come up with and idea about what to write. Blog block is somewhat worse if you ask me. Its where you are getting graded for your blogs, and have the freedom to do what you want with them, but nothing comes to mind. From a students point of view that is absoulutley awful! So I am going to come up with some ideas of how you can un-block blog block.
One thing that you obviously work is to get opinions from other people. You dont necessairly have to use their exact idea but maybe you can make an even better version of their ideas and call them your own. Another thing that could un-block your brain is to not stress yourself out. If you make unrealistic goals that say " I'm going to finish all 10 blogs in 1day." then you may be pulling you hair out soon. You should space out your priorities and give yourself enough time for each blog. If you dont, all your writing abilities will stay on blog block island for quite awhile. My last tip from blog block would be to let your mind free itself. Go for a run and listen to music while you do it. Or draw and color a picture. Anything that helps you clear you mind is for the better. This way you can come back and see your writing in a completly new light.
Now that I have freed my mind from other blogs, the rest should be quite easy!! Hopefully I never have blog block again.
